Wading through the knee high grass up to a cold and windy hilltop a couple stood gazing upon the breathtaking view of rolling hills and vineyards. When Doug from Red Dell Ltd first met the owners they were standing in their gumboots in a paddock and at that point it was just a dream.
“They had a distinct vision for their property," says Doug. "They were determined to retain the natural ridge line so their house appeared nestled into the hill. Their dream featured symmetrical terraced lawns and an access way that took you on a journey through the landscape and up to the house.”
After hearing their plans and coordinating with the architect and landscape designer, the Red Dell team was able sculpt the land to include these specific design elements, whilst also retaining the natural aesthetic.
During the development, the owners were based in Akaroa, far from where their dream was unfolding. As the project progressed, the Red Dell team relied on technology like FaceTime to keep them fully informed, and to discuss improvements as they happened.
“It is through great communication, skilled workmanship and attention to detail we are able to consistently create premium house sites," says Doug.
If you are building a home and have not given much thought to the earthworks, you are not alone. But don't underestimate the significance of high quality earthworks. Once you build, there is no changing the earth beneath.

Red Dell is owned by brothers Doug and Logan Reddell. The company works exclusively in Rodney, because of their desire to live and work locally. But you could argue that they did it for the view. This property, like so many others the team has worked on, boasts a spectacular 'view from the office’.
And as for the gumboot clad couple with the big dream?
“We could not recommend Doug and his team more highly. Efficient, practical and helped us make good decisions. Red Dell brought an artist eye to the contracting. They not only executed the work, they contributed to the vision and we couldn't be happier," they say.
Now the gumboots are off and that hilltop sits drenched in sun, ready for the next stage of development. For this is not where the story ends, but where it begins.
